Who are the Mini Vinnies?
The Society of St Vincent de Paul has been engaging with young people and education since its earliest days. Today the SVP England & Wales is pleased to highlight its continuing strong links with young people, through the development of its new 'Mini Vinnies' programme - a ground-breaking Primary Schools initiative, based on good work done in Australia, piloted in the Diocese of Shrewsbury, and which is seen as having, "the potential to significantly contribute to the future of our Society."
'Mini Vinnies' are children aged between 7 to 11 (or younger) who, with the permission of their parents and the support of their schools, are encouraged to embark on their first steps as possible 'Vincentians for life'.
As Mini Vinnies, the students have their own 'treasured' Prayer, Pledge and Badge, a dedicated website and a range of bright and documents which guide them in their formative steps - helping and enabling them to become in every sense, young Vincentians - or 'Mini Vinnies'.
Mini Vinnies’ at St Anthony’s meet regularly and are co-ordinated by one of our Chaplaincy Team.
St Anthony’s Mini Vinnies
St Anthony’s Mini Vinnies The Mini Vinnies are part of the of the St Vincent De Paul international charity organisation that has active groups in Primary schools, Senior schools, universities and Parishes. Their aim is to help anyone in need in very practical ways. The SVP, which is used across all groups is “Turning concern into action”. That is exactly what our Mini Vinnies at St Anthony’s do. We have a team of 8 Mini Vinnies. There are 2 children for each of the KS2 classes and their job is to lead the whole school in their response to local, national and international charity needs. They write and lead whole school collective worship every term to launch our charity priorities. These including Hull Food bank for Harvest festival, the seafarers woolly hat collection during Advent, our Mission together or CAFOD focus during Lent and other events that they have noticed in the news. The Mini Vinnies are currently leading on our “Live Simply” plan which they hope will extend from school out to Home and Parish.
So far this year our Mini Vinnies have:
- Led special assemblies
- Collected 24 woolly hats for the Apostleship of the Sea
- Set up all the food donations for our Harvest Festival. All of the food went to the Hull Homeless and Rootless project
- Promoted Mini Acts of Kindness each week from our dedicated display board.
