Performance Data

Children are initially assessed upon entering school in Reception. This provides a baseline assessment to use as a starting point and measure future progress. It is also crucial in supporting staff to design learning opportunities that meet the needs of the current cohort of children.

The next statutory assessment milestone comes at the end of Year 1, when the children take part in the Phonics Screening Check. This assesses how well they can recognise and blend the phonics sounds they have been learning. If they do not pass at this point, they can resit at the end of Year 2.

You will have no doubt heard of the SATs tests children undertake in primary school...SATs are statutory assessments carried out by all state schools. They assess how your child’s abilities compare nationally with other children at the end of their primary schooling.

SATs testing takes place in Year 6, at the end of Key Stage 2 (KS2). National Curriculum tests are in the following subjects: English, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.

Writing is assessed by their class teacher, based on a body of evidence, made up of their writing throughout the year. This is moderated within school, as well as across St Cuthbert's Trust. This is also regularly moderated by the local authority to support schools in making accurate and fair judgements.

Other Ways We Assess:

At St Anthony's we are constantly utilising less formal methods of assessment to ensure we are monitoring how well the children are learning and remembering the curriculum. This can look like: low-stakes quizzes, targeted questioning in a lesson, marking work in books, listening to the children reading, analysing an end of unit presentation...the list goes on.

We recognise the importance of statutory testing, however know that these only provide a small snapshot of our pupils' progress and attainment. The true magic happens in the day-to-day cycle of assessment, feedback and next steps.
